Go canoeing along River Svartån in Örebro county! Choose between different day trips or an overnight tour with sleeping in the tent or shelter.
OBS! This page is still being updated!
River Svartån runs from Lake Ölen in Värmland all the way to Örebro and Lake Hjälmaren which makes it an 80 km long canoe trail. Here you get to experience different types of nature with ‘wilderness’ combined with farmland. Many of the smaller lakes are well-known for the rich bird life and you have a good chance to see beaver.
Rent a canoe and explore River Svartån
Experitur rents out inflatable canoes that are quite light and easy to transport. You then inflate it with a foot pump. Paddles and life wests are included. Our Gumotex Palava weighs 17 kg but can take a total load of 240 kg which mostly corresponds to the weight of two adults and packing. If you’re only out for a day trip you might fit two adults and one smaller child. Read more about our inflatable canoe.
For canoeing on your own we recommend to start at Stockås shelter, southeast from Mullhyttan. Here you can start paddling downstream and soon you reach the nature reserve Skagerhultsmossen, the largest bog in Örebro county. The river continues it’s winding way throught nature areas with parts of farmland. Stop along the shore to enjoy your picnic and listen to the birds singing. After approx. 8 km you reach Backa Mill and if you don’t have access to a car here we recommend that you turn around latest here. Remember that paddling upstream is a lot harder!
From Stockås you can also choose to paddle around 3 km upstream to Lake Teen where there’s a rich bird life. The return to the shelter and starting point is fast and easy. Stockås shelter is also a great place for overnighting in case you want to be out canoeing two days.

Canoeing close to Örebro city – 22 km
This canoe tour is close to the city but still in the middle of nature and you can enjoy both farmland and beautiful buildings in the centre of town. The tour starts at ‘Välaskogen’ shelter, south of Vintrosa. We meet in the centre of Örebro and it will take around 20 min to drive to the starting place where you will get help to inflate the canoe before you start paddling. Quite soon you pass under the highway E18 and you might also see planes from Örebro Airport but eventually it gets calm and quiet again.
After approx. 10 km of canoeing you arrive at Lindbacka where there is an old mill and factory area. Here you have a 100 m lift. The old factory buildings now host art exhibition, coffee production and food/snacks. Why not stop for a while and have a look around before you get back on the water.
The next lift is at Karlslund power plant, around 400 m. Then you arrive at the beautiful area of Karlslund Manor house. Nice park- and garden areas surround the main building and there is also horse stables and horse riding school on the property. River Svartån is winding and bending and splitting in many arms in this area. It’s beautiful canoeing in beautiful surroundings!
After Karslund you will pass by the outdoor area Hästhagen but then you will see more and more houses next to the river. The most fascinating “house” is Örebro Castle. Here you also need to lift the canoe. Continue for the last 4 km and enjoy the views of Wadköping old town, the main garden Stadsparken and the island Stora Holmen. One last lift, 200 m comes at Slussen – the lock – before River Svartån has free flow all the way to Lake Hjälmaren. If you want to it’s also possible to make a little detour into River Lillån, or explore parts of Lake Hjälmaren.
During late afternoon you will be picked up at Naturens Hus, restaurant and coffee shop, where you can treat yourself with something nice to eat or drink.
Price
1780 SEK for 2 persons sharing one canoe. Transfer, pickup, start up help with inflating the canoe is included as well as lifewest, paddles and a big dry bag.
