Flat rocks and rolling waves on Lake Vättern

Paddling and hiking in the archipelago of Lake Vättern. Join Experitur on a day trip where you get to explore one of the most beautiful areas of Sweden’s second biggest lake.

The nature reserves Utnäset and Uuviken-Kyrkogårdsön are located south of Askersund and on the eastern part of Tiveden forests. These reserves consists of a dramatic coast line with steep cliffs, smooth rocks and old, wind swept trees. Wind and waves has affected the coastline for years and years and has created a wild, yet welcoming area. The water along the coast and around the islands is crystal clear.

With packraft on Lake Vättern

Paddling on Lake Vättern is really nice and a packraft makes it easy to reach islands surrounded by shallow water. The flat bottom of the packraft allows you to get to places where boats and kayaks can’t go. From the islands we can see the coast line and also the open areas of Lake Vättern. It gives you a feeling of being out on the Sea…

What is a packraft?

Packrafts are inflatable boats, or a combination of a boat and a kayak. They have a flat bottom and are very stable also when there are big waves so you don’t need to worry about tipping over. We will stay mainly on quite calm waters since the islands are protecting from the biggest waves. Ulrika, who is the guide on this tour, is a dedicated packrafter and can give lots of tips how to handle the packraft.

Our packrafts are of the type Alpacka Caribou and the total weight of packraft, paddle and lifewest is around 4 kg. When we roll the packraft together it has the size of a small tent and can easily be attached to the backpack.

Combine paddling and hiking along Vättern

We start the tour on foot at Igelbäckens masugn and follow a hiking route along Lake Vättern. The trail is slightly hilly and offer beautiful views over the archipelago. After approx. 2 km we arrive to the place where we will start packrafting. We will inflate the packraft with the help of a wind bag and it takes less than 10 minutes to get ready. The backpacks are attached on the front and then we are ready to start paddling.

We will have a break at one of the beautiful islands to have lunch and coffee. Depending on the weather we choose our route and continue exploring the archipelago, both packrafting and on foot, before we head back to the mainland. After deflating our packrafts we will walk the last bit back to the parking.
